Philadelphia, PA - The Philadelphia Phillies kicked off their 2023 season with a home opener against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday afternoon. The game took place at Citizens Bank Park, where the Phillies welcomed a full capacity crowd for the first time in nearly two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Phillies started the game strong with a three-run home run from shortstop Didi Gregorius in the bottom of the first inning. However, the Braves quickly responded with a solo home run from first baseman Freddie Freeman in the top of the second inning.

The game remained tied until the top of the seventh inning when the Braves scored two runs off Phillies reliever Hector Neris. The Phillies were unable to mount a comeback in the remaining innings, and the Braves secured a 3-4 victory.

Despite the loss, Phillies starting pitcher Aaron Nola had an impressive outing, striking out 10 batters in six innings of work. The team will look to bounce back in the second game of the series on Thursday, with Zack Wheeler taking the mound for the Phillies.
