Next week, skywatchers will be treated to the first solar eclipse of 2023. The eclipse, which will take place on April 20, will be an annular eclipse, meaning the moon will appear smaller than the sun and will not completely cover it, leaving a "ring of fire" visible around the edges.

The eclipse will be visible from parts of Asia, including Indonesia, India, and China. However, viewers in other parts of the world, including Europe and the Americas, will not be able to see the event.

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth, blocking the sun's light and casting a shadow on the Earth's surface. Annular eclipses occur when the moon is at its farthest point from Earth and appears smaller than the sun, allowing a ring of sunlight to be visible.

Viewers are advised to take proper safety precautions when viewing the eclipse, as looking directly at the sun can cause permanent eye damage. Specialized solar filters or eclipse glasses are recommended for safe viewing.

The next solar eclipse of the year will be a total eclipse on October 14, visible from parts of South America.
